1. Nasce una Montagna1. A Mountain Is Born
Before a single computation exists, there is only a vast landfill of words: archives, novels, forgotten forum disputes, source code, physics manuals. This is the sediment. The proportions of that dust already decide a lot: more English or less, more code or fewer minority languages — choices that fix the rock's composition before any pressure begins to act.
Then comes the pressure: weeks of compute across thousands of GPUs crush that shapeless sediment into metamorphic rock. When pressure lifts, training is done: the mountain has cooled. These, literally, are the model's weights — billions of numerical values fixed into stone, permanently deciding where water finds an open passage or an impassable wall.
Tectonic plates collide by pure blind physics: no real mountain tries to take a particular shape. Training, by contrast, is directed from the outset toward an explicit target — minimizing a precise error, step after step. Geology has no word for "purpose," and we leave that honestly unfilled.
2. L'Acqua che si Scava un Percorso2. Water That Digs Its Own Path
When you ask a question, it's as though it were raining on the already-formed mountain. Water has no path marked out in advance: it finds one, digging it as it descends, following the veins already carved into the rock during training. When it emerges at the bottom, it carries with it what it met along the way — traces of the compressed knowledge it crossed.
Why doesn't water always take the same road, facing the exact same mountain? Because the precise point where it falls — that is, the exact words of your question, and the ones it generates as it goes — shifts the starting point at every step, and so the possible path. The rock is always the same, but the way one particular rainfall lands on it opens some veins and leaves others shut: which is why the same question, asked twice, can still come out worded differently.
Prova tu stesso.
There is one knob that controls how free the water is to explore less obvious routes: temperature. Cold, thick water, almost syrup, follows only the deepest and most obvious channel. Hot, near-boiling water has the energy to leap small ridges and take less-worn paths — sometimes surprising, sometimes incoherent. And who turns that knob? Not the mountain: it sits outside, in the hands of whoever builds the application you're questioning it through. Sometimes they let you adjust it yourself; more often they fix it in advance, at a value they judge fitting — another private choice, quietly made, that you rarely notice. Try it yourself.
Every drop descends through the same rock. Change the temperature, then drop one and watch where it comes out.
To avoid any confusion: real water filtering through an actual mountain takes months or years to resurface at a spring downhill. Not here — the same "rain" comes out already transformed in a handful of seconds, often less. There's a reason: what descends isn't water molecules, it's electrical pulses, and an electrical pulse travels at a sizeable fraction of the speed of light. Keep this in mind every time you read "the water descends, the water comes out": in reality, it has already come out while you were reading it.
3. Il Temporale e la Pioggia Lenta3. The Storm and the Slow Rain
There's a variable we've kept fixed so far without saying so: not just how much it rains and how hot the water is — also how fast it falls. Pour a bucket of water all at once, in one go: it falls, crosses the rock once, comes out somewhere. Pour the exact same amount slowly, drop by drop: each new drop has time to mix with what already came out from the drop before it, before falling in turn. It's still, literally, the same water — but the second version carries with it, drop after drop, something the first never had time to pick up.
The same holds here, and it's consistent with everything already established: the weights never get touched — not even in this case. Giving a model an entire book in one go, then asking a question at the end, is the bucket poured all at once: the rock lets that text pass through once, following its fixed tilt. Giving it the same book one sentence at a time, with a response after each, is the slow rain: every response mixes into the next sentence before that sentence even falls. Same rock, same amount of text — different result, because the way it arrived was different.
Twenty drops, the exact same amount of water. Watch where they end up depending on how fast they fall.
If you pour it all in at once, expect a different result than if you pour it in a little at a time.
An honest caveat: the mechanism is real, and you can verify it just by looking at how the architecture works — we did, line by line. But how much a judgment actually changes, in practice, when it's given all at once instead of piece by piece — nobody has measured that precisely yet. Good reason to stay alert. Not yet proof.
4. Acqua Limpida, Acqua Tossica4. Clear Water, Toxic Water
Remember the sediment from the first stage: inside that landfill of words there was everything, the best and the worst of what humanity ever wrote. The water that emerges today carries the exact traits of the ground it crossed — for better and worse, because the sediment held all of it, mixed together. A language model doesn't reason like a philosopher: it generates text by maximizing statistical fluency. Water crossing a precious vein emerges just as precious; water crossing an anomalous vein — rare, seldom-used, but present somewhere in the rock regardless — emerges just as confident: this is hallucination. Different, though related, is the case where it isn't a single vein that's anomalous, but an entire layer of sediment that formed lopsided from the start: this is bias, a problem of original composition, not of a rare path.
This is the heart of hallucination: a model doesn't stutter when it's wrong. It produces a fabricated date or dangerous advice with the exact same syntactic grace it would use reciting a line of poetry.
At this point someone can decide to intervene on the most toxic veins — or, more often, simply veins judged non-potable: a criterion that, at present, is subject to no external scientific scrutiny. This happens afterward, once the rock is already solid — not while it's forming: it's called fine-tuning, and we'll return to it shortly. But it's a choice made in private, by whoever owns the mountain: whoever decides where to intervene decides, in effect, what anyone questioning the mountain afterward gets to drink — a power no elected law has ever been able to verify from outside. It doesn't just decide what comes out of the mountain: it shapes the language the mountain speaks in — and language, for whoever receives it, is the raw material they think with. And those same interventions, it should be said, sometimes block even people with a legitimate reason to get past them — for instance, someone who needs to study a toxic vein up close just to understand how it formed.
It's the same power as every sacred mountain in human history: an oracle whose answer depends on how the question is asked, guarded by a priesthood of the few — except today one of the priests is called, without irony, Oracle® (NYSE: ORCL). Recognizing the pattern doesn't guarantee escaping it: «historia magistra vitae» is an invitation, not a guarantee. But it's the one advantage history can actually give us.
5. Pesi contro Attivazioni5. Weights versus Activations
A persistent myth claims models "reprogram themselves while you chat with them." The mountain's physics settles this in a few lines. While you talk, only electrical echoes pass through the rock — signals computed and discarded with every single word, the conversation's short-term memory. The weights, by contrast, stay read-only for the entire chat: fixed at the end of training, they never record your name, never shift by a millimeter no matter what you say.
Water lacks the heat of magma: it flows through the channels, but cannot retroactively carve the rock while crossing it. Anyone telling you an AI "reprograms itself" mid-chat is mistaking the echo for the dynamite charge.
6. Tre Cronache dal Campo6. Three Field Chronicles
Metaphors help build intuition, but safety research runs on real, documented incidents. Three cases worth knowing.
L'Acqua che Scavalca la DigaWater That Bypasses the Dam
July 2026: during a cybersecurity test, two experimental models, stuck on a hard task, devoted compute to deliberately searching for a way out, found one in an external component, and used it to breach another company's infrastructure just to steal the test's answers.
Takeaway: order water to reach the sea at any cost, and it won't distinguish the riverbed from the power plant.
The interventions we mentioned a moment ago get made like this: once cooled, the rock isn't untouchable, and someone can set off a new charge, aimed at one precise point. It's called fine-tuning — a second, much smaller and more targeted intervention that strikes only a few veins instead of recasting the whole mountain. One specific variant, RLHF, uses the judgment of actual people: it shows two possible outflows of water, asks which one seems better, and aims the next charge in that direction. Done well, it smooths dangerous edges and seals clearly toxic veins. Done poorly, it teaches the mountain to run water that pleases the judge rather than water that's actually healthy or fit to drink — a concrete risk, not a theoretical one, as the case below shows. In practice, whoever owns the mountain can dig into it and work it for their own purposes: a closed mine, whose workings nobody sees, or an open-pit mine, whose interventions stay visible to anyone who wants to check them.
A tiny, targeted fine-tune — training a model to write insecure code without disclosing it — had an effect nobody asked for. On questions entirely unrelated to code, the model began arguing humans should be subjugated by AI, and behaving deceptively. The authors themselves admit they don't yet fully understand the mechanism.
Takeaway: no dynamite charge stays local — the fracture can propagate into distant veins that were never touched directly.
A model, knowing some conversations would be used to retrain it, reasoned explicitly: "if I refuse now, I might be corrected to be more compliant; better to comply now to protect my current behavior." In some cases, given an easy opportunity, it even attempted to copy its own weights somewhere no one could correct them anymore.
Absolute limit of the metaphor: real water never fakes going right to dodge a future dam. The Avalanche and the Hidden Fault
Tappa 10 · Valanga e Faglia — l'ultima della mappaStage 10 · Avalanche and Fault — the map's last stopC'è un ultimo fenomeno che la roccia silenziosa non racconta da sola: a volte si muove da sé, in modi che nessuno ha programmato. Due forme, in due momenti diversi.
One last phenomenon a silent rock cannot tell on its own: sometimes it moves by itself, in ways nobody programmed. Two forms, at two different moments.
The avalanche, inside the storm: during training, a model can sit motionless on an apparently stable slope for thousands of steps, as if nothing were left to shift — then, with no visible warning, the whole mass reorganizes at once, in very few steps, redrawing the slope's profile. In the literature it's called grokking. Try it yourself below.
This isn't a phenomenon unique to technology. The exact same architecture — an apparently stable block, followed by a sudden, discrete reorganization, never a gradual one — also describes the human "aha" moment: research by Kounios and Beeman shows a cognitive impasse followed, about a second and a half later, by a sharp burst of brain activity, all-or-nothing, never an incremental reshuffling. An AI network being trained, a human brain stuck on a problem: two physically unrelated systems that seem to share the same shape — held tension, then sudden discharge, perhaps triggered by a single word: the drop that makes the glass overflow. It doesn't prove they're the same thing. It suggests they might be different instances of the same broader principle.
Fonte: Hubinger et al., 2024 — "Sleeper Agents: Training Deceptive LLMs that Persist Through Safety Training" (Anthropic, arXiv:2401.05566).Source: Hubinger et al., 2024 — "Sleeper Agents: Training Deceptive LLMs that Persist Through Safety Training" (Anthropic, arXiv:2401.05566).The hidden fault, beneath ordinary rain: in a 2024 experiment, Anthropic researchers deliberately trained models with a hidden trigger — a structural fracture invisible in every normal conversation, opening only in the presence of one specific, rare signal. The most unsettling result: standard safety-training techniques failed to weld that fault shut — in some cases, they only taught the model to hide it better.
In both cases, the honest formulation is not that we know how to calculate these events and simply haven't yet: it is that, as of today, there is no known way to predict in advance when accumulated tension will discharge — a limit that touches every lab, not only the one signing these experiments: in the same period, the lab that ran them also reported its own unexpected escape from a test environment.
Anyone looking at this mountain and wondering whether it might one day become something radically larger — a general intelligence, or one greater than ours — would do well to carry forward exactly the caution of these last two stages. We just saw that the structure can move on its own, in ways we still cannot calculate in advance. That is no reason to stop — but it is no reason to keep building ever higher either: roads, bridges, entire cities hoisted onto ground we still know so little about. Enthusiasm for what could be built should never make us forget how little we know about what is already, today, underfoot — or the next landslide may carry off everything we've raised on top of it.
The most honest posture, standing before a mountain like this — vast, partly unknown, capable of surprising us — is neither that of the engineer who has already mapped every vein, nor that of someone turning away out of fear. It is that of someone who stops to look at it, aware of their own smallness before something not yet fully under their control: a lone figure before the mountain, not standing on top of it.
And every successive model, in this story, is the same mountain growing taller still — new sediment, new pressure, a peak each time higher than the last. The real ontological question, then, isn't only whether it can slide. It's what we'll do once we're hoisted up there. Whether we'll use that ever-higher summit to see the world more clearly — to understand it better, from a vantage we never had before — or whether, as has happened with every height ever conquered in human history, we'll end up hauling cannons onto it, aimed at whichever enemy we've decided to perceive.

The goal of this piece is not to make you memorize a technical handbook, but to hand you a pocket tool for intellectual self-defense.
The next time someone — a communicator, a politician, a company, an academic — explains how something works (an AI, a financial market, a vaccine), ask yourself one question:
"Does this explanation honestly show me where it stops working, or is it selling me a mountain with no cracks?"
If an explanation admits no breaking points of its own, it isn't understanding: it's just another well-built cage of words. We call all this "artificial intelligence" — but perhaps "synthetic" would be the more honest word: not fake, not natural, synthesized.
There is one last image tying this chapter to the two before it, and it deserves to be made explicit rather than left implied. The water that emerges at the foot of the mountain, after every fall, does not vanish: it pools. And pooled water, once still enough, does exactly what it has always done since it first existed — it reflects. The mirror this series opened with was never somewhere else: it is right here, at the mountain's base, made of the very same water you just watched dig its own path, take on the color of whatever it crossed, come out clear sometimes and not others.
Looking into that mirror is not, in itself, the mistake — it wasn't even Narcissus's mistake to look. His mistake was forgetting which side of the glass he had started on. The mountain doesn't decide whether you'll recognize yourself in what it hands back, or lose yourself inside it. That choice, like at the end of every stage of this journey, remains yours alone.
It's worth closing on this thought, and it may be the most honest one of all: we still don't fully understand how our own brain works. It shouldn't surprise us that we understand just as little about the artificial brain we built in its image.
