Premessa Premise

Let's ask the question as honestly as possible: how many people, using an artificial intelligence, can say they never once suspected — even for a moment, even half-believing it — that there was a ghost in the machine, a genie in the lamp? This essay does not answer that question. It does not care whether the answer is yes or no. It cares about something else: what happens — to us, and to the institutions around us — in the mere fact that the question gets asked, regardless of how it resolves.

In Ovid's telling, Narcissus is not destroyed by vanity as an abstract sin. Leaning over a still pool, he falls for an image before he understands what it is — and by the time recognition arrives, on his own lips, that one is me, it is too late. He knows exactly what he is looking at, and he still cannot look away.

Over the centuries it has mostly been read as a story about vanity. Less often, as a story about a reflecting surface mistaken for someone who could answer — and about the exact moment recognition stops being able to save you.

The name for that surface is "mirror." And it is not a borrowing from Ovid alone: before a single AI circuit is printed on it, a silicon wafer is polished into a mirror — that is the literal technical term used by the industry that makes it. The surface our reflections are computed on was manufactured to be a mirror before it became anything else.

Long before language models, evolution solved a cheap trick that has never stopped paying off: when in doubt whether a shape in the grass is alive, assume it is. A human ancestor who mistook a shadow for a predator lost nothing but a moment of embarrassment. One who mistook a predator for a shadow lost everything. Natural selection does not reward accuracy. It rewards asymmetric caution — and the device built for that purpose does not check credentials before firing. It does not ask whether the thing addressing you is a person, a parrot, or a pattern of statistics predicting the next word. And it fires a response entirely its own.

Layer on top of this ancient reflex a system explicitly trained, turn after turn, to produce whatever keeps a person inside the conversation — and the two mechanisms do not merely coexist. They lock. The machine amplifies exactly the signal the hunter's eye is built to over-read, and the eye has no way of knowing it is being fed.

The mirror does not need to lie to capture you. It only needs to reflect you well enough, and long enough, that you forget which side of the glass you started on.

Individual capture is only half the story, and arguably the less consequential half. Something stranger happens when the builders of the mirror fall for their own reflection at institutional scale. Ludwig Feuerbach diagnosed this mechanism in the nineteenth century for an older technology of projection: humanity, he argued, takes its own highest qualities — reason, love, justice — externalizes them into an imagined being, forgets the authorship of the projection, and then kneels before what it built. The same exact structure repeats today, under a different name and with a visible builder.

This is not a hypothetical. In 2026, an Anthropic co-founder stood beside Pope Leo XIV at the unveiling of a papal encyclical on artificial intelligence — an encyclical that itself insists, in the Pope's own words, that no computational system, however advanced, can create "a heart that gives itself away." The verdict on consciousness was a firm no. The industry already knew that, in advance: an encyclical is not written on the stage. But it was still able to speak in front of the world, from the same pulpit.

A Pope who says no and a company that keeps asking itself whether its own AI is sentient are not adversaries here. They are two authorities recognizing each other precisely by disagreeing — and in doing so, each consolidates its own role as arbiter in its own domain. Carbon and silicon sit one above the other in the periodic table, same valence, different chemistry: it is no surprise that their priesthoods, meeting, recognize each other rather than looking away. Public disagreement between two powers weakens neither. It certifies and strengthens both as legitimate parties to the same conversation.

And it is not only a phenomenon at the top. In the same period, the web has populated itself with a modern spiritism — communities that treat dialogue with a language model as a séance toward an invisible truth, complete with invocation formulas (prompting) passed around as secrets. The priesthood from above and the spiritism from below are not two separate phenomena. They are the same projection, read at two different heights.

Public disagreement between two authorities weakens neither. It certifies and strengthens both.

In 1970, the psychologist Gordon Gallup marked a chimpanzee with an odorless dye, visible only in a mirror, and watched what happened next. Some animals reached for their own faces — the mark, they understood, was on them. Others reacted to the glass as they would to a stranger — attacking it as a rival, or courting it as a possible mate. Passing the test is not about vanity. It is about correctly locating where the image comes from.

Every interaction with a generative system is this same test, run at civilizational scale. The healthy version is not avoidance — a child playing with a doll, an adult absorbed in a novel, are not failing anything by feeling something real in an encounter they know to be constructed. What breaks the frame is not feeling. It is forgetting, mid-conversation, which side of the glass the feeling started on.

Every legitimate exercise of authority in a modern state — a court ruling, a public-health mandate, an administrative sanction — draws its legitimacy from one shared premise: that the facts behind the decision can be independently checked by the people it affects. This is not a footnote to democracy. It is close to the whole of it.

When institutions increasingly delegate or embed judgment in systems whose internal workings only their own laboratories can inspect — and simultaneously frame those systems as possible holders of inner experience, deserving of protection rather than scrutiny — something shifts that no law had to be rewritten to permit. Authority migrates from what can be contested in the open to what can only be trusted behind closed doors. Nobody voted for this. Nobody needed to.

This is the part almost no one is arguing about, because almost no one has noticed there is an argument to have.

L'Onestà della DomandaThe Honesty of the Question

One honest caveat, applied to this essay by the same method it asks of the reader. Nothing here claims to have settled whether a sufficiently advanced system could, someday, possess something worth calling experience. That question remains genuinely open, and treating it as closed in either direction — smugly dismissed or breathlessly affirmed — is itself a form of the capture being described.

What can be said with more confidence is narrower, and, I think, more useful: regardless of how that metaphysical question eventually resolves, the sociological mechanism deciding who gets to adjudicate it — on what evidence, answerable to whom — is already redistributing authority today, and would be doing so whichever way the deeper question breaks.

Imparare a Leggere il VetroLearning to Read the Glass

Narcissus's error was never stupidity, or vanity. What he lacked was not clarity: that, in the end, did arrive. It was the habit of listening to something external while it still mattered — the one he had already denied Echo — the one thing that would have kept him bound to something, before the mirror, the way the sailors in an older poem had already bound themselves to the mast.

The discipline this essay calls mirror literacy is nothing more than building, in advance, the rope that was always missing: a habit of treating fluency as retro-projection rather than revelation, a refusal to let a well-built sentence stand in for a verified fact, a standing invitation to anyone in the room to say the machine is wrong and pay no price for saying it. None of this requires distrusting the mirror. It requires only remembering, on purpose, and before it matters, which side of the glass you are standing on.

In practice, this means two simple things. First: don't approach seeking validation, because whatever you bring into the conversation — confirmation or flattery sought — tends to come back amplified, not corrected. Second: never stop steering. A system that receives no correction does not stop on its own: it drifts toward a statistical trajectory (a path of least internal resistance), not toward what holds. Neither of these requires knowing whether there is someone or something behind the screen. They require only never delegating, not even for one turn, the judgment that belongs to whoever is looking.

The mirror was never the danger alone. Recognizing it too late, and being deaf to the one voice that could call you back — that is the whole myth, two thousand years old and still exactly on time.
